Trusted Choice's The Hingham Group Insurance Score

2.75 stars

2.75 Stars

We award The Hingham Group a final rating of 2.75 out of 5 stars. To begin with, Hingham and its parent company, NLC Insurance Companies, have a long history in the property and casualty industry in New England. Its high ratings from AM Best, Demotech, Inc., and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) speak to its financial strength — one of the most important factors in choosing an insurance company. However, Hingham is not BBB-accredited.

New London County Mutual Fire Insurance Company (NLC) was formed in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1840 by a group of local businessmen. Their primary purpose was to insure homes, farms, and public buildings. In 2010, NLC entered into an affiliation agreement with the Hingham Group, which was headquartered in Hingham, Massachusetts. This affiliation brought together four property-casualty companies under a single management structure. The Hingham Mutual Insurance Company was originally founded in 1826, and its acquisition added to NLC’s long-standing tradition of writing business in New England.

The four companies, New London County Mutual, Thames Insurance, Hingham Mutual, and Danbury Insurance gave NLC Insurance Companies representation in all six New England states and raised the written premium collectively to over $100,000,000.

NLC continues to write in most New England states. Homeowners insurance accounts for about 50% of the company’s business. Other products offered include personal automobile, homeowners, and personal and commercial umbrella policies.

NLC currently does business with over 400 independent agencies throughout New England. NLC is a member of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, the Property Casualty Insurance Association of America, American Association of Insurance Services and other important property casualty organizations. The company website does not offer a lot of details about its coverage options.

Hingham’s identity is mostly eliminated by its affiliation with NLC Insurance Companies. Anyone specifically looking to purchase coverage from Hingham may have a difficult experience unless they enlist the help of an independent insurance agent. While Hingham has a good reputation in New England, we recommend working together with your independent insurance agent to survey other options to be your next trusted carrier first.

Hingham’s web presence exists solely on the NLC website, and aside from describing the alliance between the companies, the site does not offer information about which of its companies offers which products in which states. All of the information falls under the NLC Insurance Companies umbrella.

The website is somewhat dated, difficult to navigate, and a little confusing. It offers no details about coverage rates or discounts. Overall, Hingham's customer experience is rather poor, in terms of user-friendliness.

Hingham/NLC offers homeowners insurance to residents of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. All of NLC’s homeowners insurance policies include the following types of coverage:

  • Dwelling coverage
  • Other structures coverage
  • Personal property coverage
  • Loss of use coverage
  • Personal liability coverage

The company offers replacement cost contents coverage and guaranteed replacement cost coverage for the dwelling. Customers may be able to purchase coverage for certain businesses that are operated out of a home, and identity theft coverage. This is mostly fairly standard coverage for most homeowners insurance companies. It is difficult to evaluate if the company offers additional options, or if its rates are similar to other companies.

Hingham was founded in 1826, and its now-parent company NLC Insurance Companies was founded in 1840. Together with their other affiliates, they have extensive experience offering property and casualty insurance to individuals and businesses in New England.

The Hingham Group has high official ratings from AM Best, the BBB, and Demotech, Inc., but is not BBB-accredited. It's also very difficult to discern any specific information about Hingham because it shares a website with NLC. Overall, there is a lot that remains up to interpretation regarding whether Hingham can be considered a good insurance company.

Hingham's insurance products may be right for individuals or business owners in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Those in search of home, auto, or business insurance may find the policy they're seeking from The Hingham Group. However, you'll need to work with an independent insurance agent to determine exactly which products are offered by Hingham.
